Funeral services for Matthew B. (Matt) Thumm, 18, were held at the First United Church of Christ April 14, 1989 with the Rev. Robert Molsberry officiating. Burial was in Tipton Masonic cemetery. Pallbearers were K. C. Wallace, Billy Hillyer, Dan Treimer, Troy Mente, Mike Rekemeyer and Toby Boettcher, classmates. Jane Osborn was vocalist; Betty Trevathan was organist.

Thumm died in a car-truck crash 12 miles south of Tipton at 9:13 p.m. April 11.

The son of Byron B. (Burt) and Rose Marie Lichlyter Thumm, he was born at DeWitt March 7, 1971. He was a member of the senior class at Tipton high school and was employed at Family Foods.

He was active in athletics at Tipton and was a member of the football, basketball and baseball teams. He was a member of First United Church of Christ.

He is survived by his father; a sister, Paula Thumm, Marshalltown; his paternal grandmother, Pauline Thumm, Mechanicsville and cousins, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his mother, his paternal grandfather and maternal grandparents.
