June 28, 1916 - June 21, 2012

Bessie Elizabeth Fenton, age 95, of Centerville, Iowa, died Thursday, June 21, 2012 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. She was born on June 28, 1916 in Brandon, Colorado to Allen and Sylvia (White) Cochran. She attended school in a Appanoose County Country School. On September 9, 1931, Bessie was united in marriage to Emerl Fenton in Unionville, Missouri. Bessie and Emerl farmed and ran a dairy business for several years. After his death she took employment at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, Iowa as a cook until her retirement. After Emerl passed away, she was married to Carl Fenton on April 12, 1976. In 1991 she and two sisters, all widowed, moved to Centerville, Iowa. In 2006 she moved to Urbandale, Iowa to take up residence with her daughter and son-in-law, Paul and Betty Burns.

Bessie was a member of the Drake Avenue Christian Church and involved herself in church activities. Bessie enjoyed piecing and hand quilting quilts for family and friends from as far away as California and Florida. She loved reading, but her greatest love was her family and she was always excited to see each and every one of them. She was preceded in death by: her parents; husbands, Emerl Fenton on December 20, 1961 and Carl Fenton on March 10, 1981; son, Donald Fenton; son-in-law, Keith DeVore, grandsons, Mike Levis and Jeffrey Burns; sisters, Thelma Dering, Vera Hinson, Isal Crow and Ruby Davison; brothers, Roy, Lester, Carl, Eugene and Ray Cochran. She is survived by her daughters, Beulah DeVore of Seymour, IA, Mary Lou and her husband, Jim Levis of Corydon, Iowa, Betty and her husband, Paul Burns of Urbandale, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Carol Fenton of Moberly, Missouri; 10 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 21 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Montieth of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Vivian Cochran of Lavonia, Michigan; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at 1 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with Rev. Carl Heien officiating. Burial will follow in the Crossroads Cemetery near Plano, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 from 10 am until the time of services at the funeral home with the family present.
