The 96th Shannon City alumni banquet will be held Saturday, May 27, at the Eagles Club in Creston.

Registration and reminiscing starts at 3 p.m. with the meal being served at 5 p.m. The earlier time will give guests time to visit before eating, according to Ann COMER SANSON, one of the alumni committee members.

The 50th year (1956) graduate, Illa Mae KELLER HESLOP, will be honored along with graduates from the 1954 (55th), 1956 (60th) and 1941 (65th) classes. There will be a "freewill donation" taken to cover expenses and contribute to the Shannon City Oakland Cemetery maintenance fund.

Reservations need to be made by Tuesday, May 24, by calling Bonnie ERGENBRIGHT BAKER of Creston or Linda FOY JAMES of Creston.

The committee asks the alumni members to pass the word on to their classmates, family and friends if they haven't received notification, according to SANSON. The committee asks that when calling in reservations, please give name and guest name(s), plus the year graduated or attended Shannon City.

Seventy-seven alumni and guests attended the 96th Shannon City alumni banquet held Saturday, May 27, 2006 at the Eagle's Club in Creston. Co-chairwomen were Bonnie ERGENBRIGHT BAKER (1959), Linda FOY JAMES (1960) of Creston, and Ann COMER SANSON (1959) of Clarinda.

Registration started at 3 p.m. with a 5 p.m. supper. The invocation was given by Ron SANSON of Clarinda.

Ann SANSON served as master of ceremonies for the evening and shared information on letters she had received from alumni during this past year before introduction the surviving graduate, Illa Mae KELLER HESLOP (Creston) from the 1956 class (50th year). The other graduates were Janice WILSON CLARK, Carl Gene SIMPSON, Richard SWARTZ and Larry WEBER.

Eight other graduates attending were celebrating their 55th, 60th and 65th banquets. They were (1951) Geneva KELLER CLAYBAKER (Afton) and Gerry WILSON (Des Moines); (1946) Verla SWINEHART FITZGERALD (Nevada), Eloise KILGORE WHITE (Shannon City), Perry LANGER (Frederick CO) and Anna SWANSON WEIS (Afton) and (1941) Darrel LONG (Creston) and Isabel HORTON TROST (Lenox).

After each alumni and guests introduced themselves, 1949 graduate, Alivon CLOUGH of Ellston, told the group he has written a book entitled "The Old Man on the Deck" and gave some background about his book. A short business meeting was conducted and it was decided that BAKER, JONES and SANSON will be in charge of the banquet next year. The date has been set for Saturday, May 26, 2007 at the Eagle's Club, starting with registration at 3 p.m. and supper being served at 5 p.m.

A freewill donation was taken with half being sent to the Oakland Cemetery Maintenance Fund in Shannon City.
