The BARKER & WEBB and FREELAND building, occupied by HARVEY Brothers garage, was gutted by fire Sunday morning. An
apartment above the garage, occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Everett WALTER, and all of its contents were completely
destroyed and an adjoining building, occupied by Charles PRITCHARD'S body and fender shop, was badly damaged. Verne
TAGGERT'S barbershop, directly east of the body shop, and the office of the Payne Freight Lines suffered smoke damage.
Lloyd H. GOINS of Diagonal was named commissioner of the Ringgold Soil Convservation District at a close election held
Monday night at the vocational agricultural building in Mount Ayr. He received eight votes while seven were cast for
Billy D. HARDING of Redding. Mr. GOINS succeeds W. B. CUNNING who was not a candidate to succeed himself after
seving as a commissioner since the district was established 14 years ago. Other commissioners are Ralph LONG of
Washington township and Cecil SICKELS of Poe township.
A 1951 Ford, driven by Orval MOTSINGER of Maloy, and a 1948 Studebaker, operated by Ora HOLLIS of Hepburn, collided
at an intersection on a gravel road northwest of Diagonal.
Bob ALLEN of Tingley and Ryland GARNER of Delphos each has been awarded a purebred gilt by the Mount Ayr Lions Club.
ALLEN and GARNER and the two other candidates, Randall DAVENPORT of Diagonal and Marvin LANE of Mount Ayr, were guests
of the Lions Club at their regular dinner meeting held Wednesday night of last week. Announcement of the winners was made
by members of the Agricultural Committee of the club. Bob, a son of the David ALLENS, is a member of the Tingley Toppers
4-H Club and a freshman in the Tingley high school. Ryland, FFA candidate to receive a gilt, is a senior in the
Mount Ayr high school. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Marion GARNER.
The Tingley residence property of the late Charles L. HILL was sold Friday at public auction to Harvey H. and Gladys
BISCHOFF for $525.
The Mount Ayr Livestock Market, owned and operated for five years by LeGrande MILLER, was sold this week to Alvin
TULL of Tingley. Possession will be given Friday, Nov. 1.
Dr. J. W. HILL, who has been a patient for the past two weeks in the Ringgold County Hospital, was the recipient of an
anniversary cake Thusday. The cake was presented to Dr. HILL by the nurses at the hospital in recognition of his
50 years of service to the medical profession.
Charles PRITCHARD has leased the Sandwich Shop from Mr. and Mrs. Cleo BURCHETT, effective the first of November.
