For the first time since 1980, a person is being charged with murder in an incident in Ringgold county. A Creston
man is in custody and charged with first degree murder and child endangerment in the death of a 15-month-old Diagonal
girl, Bailey GRAHAM, that took place July 18. Aaron G. HAYS, 20, was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 20, by the Ringgold
County Sheriff's Department and is being held in the Ringgold county jail on bond of $200,000.
A Nuevo Laredo, Mexico man is in the Ringgold county jail after he was arrested for attempting to receive a package
of marijuana mailed to him at the Mount Ayr post office. U.S. Post Office investigators and the Ringgold County
Sherrif's Office arrested the man, who has identified himself as Jose MEDINA, 18, when he accepted delivery of a
package which contained 18 pounds of a substance which appeared to be marijuana with a street value of some
$18,000. Another package of marijuana weighting some 32 pounds for MEDINA was found at the Creston post office
earlier. The two packages were found with the help of the Clarke County Sheriff's Department's drug dog, Sarah.
Eric JONES of Granger, grandson of J. W. and Betty ROBERTSON of Redding, finished 36th out of the 43
drivers in NASCAR'S Busch Grand National event. Dale EARNHARDT, Jr. won the nationally televised event.
A Mount Ayr Community high school student was named first alternate for the second year to the Iowa All-State
Bank. At tryouts in Atlantic Saturday, Scott LAURITSEN, a Mount Ayr Community high school senior, just missed being
named to the all-state band. Also trying out for the All-State Band Saturday was saxophonist Kyle RICHARDSON.
Joyce BELVILLE of Lawton, OK, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold GOLLIDAY of Mount Ayr, received a national award
at the 1998 Association of the United States Army annual meeting in Washington, D.C. recently. BELVILLE was
honored as one of eight regional winners and received the Exceptional Civilian Service Award in Support of National
Defense.
Louisa county chief deputy sheriff Curt BRABY, formerly of Mount Ayr, recently received an award from the Law
Enforcement Coordinating Committee for his work breaking a drug trafficking organization. The award from the
United States Attorney said BRABY had "Exemplified the highes standard of cooperative law enforcement in the
United States."
In late September, a bronze plaque was installed in front of the cattle exhibition building at the Ringgold
county fairgrounds. Mr. and Mrs. Clair HEYER of Tingley donated the plaque and Lawrence BISHOP of Tingley
installed the plaque.
