Friday was the date for the homecoming of Mount Ayr Community School. The junior class float, with JoAnne BLUNCK in a
swing, won first prize in the school division and the Band Boosters won second. First place honors in the businessmen's
division was awarded to Fennema Implement Company float and the Mount Ayr Mill and Feed Company won second place.
The five candidates for homecoming queen were Judy RICE, Sandra WOOD, Lou REYNOLDS, Jeanne WELLS and Judy KEPLINGER.
Crowned as homecoming queen by Sup. C. Arthur HANSEN preceding the Osceola-Mount Ayr game was Lou REYNOLDS, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Earl REYNOLDS of Kellerton.
The Raiders won their homecoming contest with the Osceola Indians Friday
night, 13-6, as Ronnie WILLEY, senior fullback, raced for two touchdowns and reeled off 161 total net yards. A large
crowd witnessed the first game in many years that the Raiders defeated the Osceola Indians on the Raider's field.
Thomas MOSIER, senior in the Mount Ayr Community high school, has been named a semi-finalist in the 1958-59 National
Merit Scholarship competition, announcement of which has been made by principal Vance E. GEIGER. Thomas is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene MOSIER of Mount Ayr.
Six officers of the Mount Ayr Future Farmers of America chapter and their instructor, R. E. HAUPTMANN, returned today
from Kansas City, MO where since Tuesday they had attended all sessions of the national FFA convention. Those who
attended were Leland RAUCH, president; Robert D. JONES, vice-president; Eddie BROWN, secretary; James SMITH, treasurer;
Ryland GARNER, reporter; Royce RINEHART, sentinel and Mrs. HAUPTMANN.
Fire of unknown origin Friday night completely destroyed the dwelling of Will WARRICK 200-acre farm in Lotts Creek
township, occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Doyle DENHART and sons, Joe and Jim. The fire was first noticed about 8 p.m. by Bill
MOON and Glenn MICHELSON, who notified the Frank DREDGES, who reside across the road from the DENHARTS. The Mount
Ayr Volunteer Fire Department was summoned, but the fire had gains such headway that the dwelling could not be saved.
However, firemen were able to keep the blaze from spreading to other buildings.
The residence property of the late Narsissia WITHERS in Sheldon Heights was sold Monday afternoon at public auction to
Horace A. JOHNSTON of Diagonal for $9,600. Immediate possession was given. The sale was conducted by Guy MILLER and
Ona MILLER, executors, Grant L. HAYES, attorney for the estate, and Dennis OWENS, auctioneer.
