The Ayr Days celebration is coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Mount Ayr. Each year brings new events for the
schedule. They include a flyover by the Iowa National Guard jets, an Ayr Days queen contest which has six entrants
in its revival this year, a visit by a pipe and drum band from Kansas City, MO, a performance by the Heartland
Hoedown Cloggers, a three-on-three basketbal tournament on the northeast corner of the square, an antique tractor
show on the northwest corner of the square and a car show on the north side of the square.
Governor Terry BRANSTAD made the Ringgold county stop on his "thank you" tour to Iowa's 99 counties here Wednesday,
Sept. 2. He was presented with a certificate of appreciation for support of a national American Legion program
as part of his visit to Mount Ayr. Bill RUSK made the presentation on behalf of the National American Legion for
the governor's support of the "Show Your Colors America" campaign to seek a constitutional amdendment to make
desecration of the American flag a crime.
There were no surprises in the school board election in three county area school districts held Tuesday. No opponents
ran agains the people listed on the ballots and those on the ballot had no trouble in winning election to new three-year
terms. In the Mount Ayr Community school district, Craig ELLIOTT was re-elected to a new term in the at-large
director district and David RICHARDS was elected for the first time after having been named to fill an unexpired term
on the board from director district 3.
Incumbent Becky STAMPS in director district #1 and new board member
Melinda ENGLAND in director district #2 were named to terms on the Diagonal Community school board by voters
Tuesday. There was only board seat up for election in the Clearfield Community school district board of directors and
Keith BENNETT was voted in again there.
Two major events remain on the agenda of the Ringgold County Historical Society for 1998 - a 25th anniversary open house and
the fifth and sixth grade history tours. A special 25th anniversary open house at the Ringgold County Pioneer Center
Museum in Ellston is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27. A committee headed by Nan DERSCHEID has been working on this project.
The annual fifth and sixth grade Iowa history tours will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 15 and 16. Seven area
schools are expected to participate.
Joyce ENGLAND of Mount Ayr was honored at a recent national conference in Saint Louis, MO as the 1998 trainer of
the year in the nation for the Rossiter System, training which assists in employee recovery from repetitve motion injuries.
ENGLAND, who is employed by Bunn-O-Matic Corportion in Creston, is part of a team of in-house trainers who teach various
levelos of the Rossiter techniques to workers.
