Vonda SIMPSON, who just graduated from Mount Ayr Community high school, was the first place winner in the Fifth District
Congressional Art contest held recently. SIMPSON, whose parents are Mr. and Mrs. Dick SIMPSON of Mount Ayr, received
a $125 scholarship for the first place finish and her picture will be hung in the U.S. Capitol as part of a national exhibit.
Ivan TULL, 28, of rural Mount Ayr, was killed Tuesday morning in a farm accident in a field one-quarter mile south of the
Mount Ayr Livestock Auction barn in Mount Ayr according to the Ringgold county sheriff's department. At 6:30 a.m. Levi
HANSEN of Audubon was disking his field with at Steiger tractor pulling a 30-foot disk, authories said. TULL, unnoticed by
HANSEN who was looking to the side following his disk track, moved in front of the tractor and was run over by the disk.
For the first time ever, Ringgold county is home of the District Pork Queen. Tammy WALTERS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale
WALTERS of rural Mount Ayr, the 1984 Ringgold County Pork Queen, was crowned district pork queen by 1983 district pork
queen Teresa WILLEMSEN of rural Otley.
Eva PATRICK of Mount Ayr received an award for being the oldest person ever to receive outpatient surgery at Mercy
Medical Center in Des Moines recently. Mrs. PATRICK, who is 100 years old, had a wedge resection done on her right lower
eyelid in May. She was presented the award by Sue SMITH, assistant head nurse for Outpatient Surgery, and had her picture
featured in the hospital's bulletin.
Mildred JOHNSTON of Beaconsfield accepted an award on behalf of the Tingley Kitchen Band as certificates and plaques were
presented to individuals and groups at the annual Governor's Volunteer Awards ceremony held in Des Moines May 10. Governor
Terry Branstad made the presentation.
Ken JEZEK, 22, of Los Angeles, CA, son of Earl JEZEK, formerly of Diagonal and now of Los Angeles, CA, was a featured
dancer on the program of "Jump' on Channel 13 TV at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 31. His grandmother is Matilda JEZEK of
Clearview Home, Mount Ayr.
Vanette HUNT, 16, of Diagonal, has been selected as one of 16 candidates for state 4-H office. The eight year 4-Her is
the daughter of Frank and Lois HUNT.
A new business has moved to Mount Ayr and will be opening June 4. Triple "A" Shoe Repair, owned by Doug LEAR, will be
opening six blocks west of the square on Madison Street. The business moved to Mount Ayr from Afton and the LEARS moved
from Thayer. Doug and his wife, Cheri, have two sons, Dusty and Derric.
It was ribbon cutting time at Jim JOBE Chevrolet-Buick-Pontiac, Inc., in Mount Ayr last week during the new car
dealership's grand opening. The dealership was formerly owned by Andy JOHNSTON.
