TOOK HER OWN LIFE.
Miss Nora Marlow Jumped Into Upper Iowa River Thanksgiving Morning-_Died Shortly After Being Rescued.
On Thanksgiving morning Miss Nora Marlow plunged into the deep water of the Upper Iowa river below the A. Bernatz & Sons’ Main street dam, but when she was rescued the flame of life was so nearly spent that she died shortly after.
Miss Marlow was seen walking toward the river shortly after eleven o’clock. Near one of the boathouses a short distance above the dam she removed her outer wraps and walked out upon the ice. Some boys who saw her stated that she tried to break a hole in the ice by stamping with her foot, but failing in this she deliberately walked to the dam and jumped into the water below.
The cry of the boys brought Earl White and Roy Green and wife to the scene. Earl jumped in the water and succeeded in bringing the body to shore. Marshall Johnson and Sheriff Flemming were notified and hurried to the dam with all speed, and Miss Marlow was taken to the hospital. Dr. Jewell was called also, but it was found that she had died on the way.
No one knows the cause of the deed. For years Miss Marlow has been more or less eccentric, but no one considered that she was seriously deranged. As far as known she has never evidenced a suicidal tendency, so it can only be surmised that in a fit of dispondency{sic} she did that which is deeply regretted by the community.
The funeral was held Saturday afternoon a t 1:30 o’clock at the Congregational church, Rev. M. Willett officiating, and the remains were interred by the side of other relatives in the Canoe cemetery. Of her parental family the only survivor is her brother C. C. Marlow. To him the sympathy of many friends is extended.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows Elnora “Nora” Marlow was born Dec. 20, 1860; however, her gravestone in Russell Cemetery shows she died Nov. 24, 1912 which doesn’t agree with the above. However, she did have a brother C. C. Marlow so I think this is the same person, just incorrect year of death on gravestone.
