Walter H. Newmaster, 82, of 714 Edwards Drive, died Jan. 11, 2003, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
He was born May 31, 1920, in Cherryvale, Kan., to Henry and Ruth Krone Newmaster. He married Louise Brandewiede on April 7, 1945, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Wichita, Kan.
He was a graduate of Bartlesville High School in Bartelsville, Okla,. and Oklahoma State University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked for Boeing Aircraft prior to serving in the Army Air Corps in France during World War II with the engineering unit for B-29s. A resident of Ottumwa since 1948, he worked for 34 years at John Deere Ottumwa Works, retiring in 1982 as a division engineer. He was a member of Saint Mary of the Visitation, Knights of Columbus Council No. 888, Society of Mechanical Engineers, Deere Supervisors Club and Master Gardeners.
Surviving are his wife; three sons, Thomas Newmaster of Ada, Okla., Robert Newmaster of St. Louis, Mo., and Greg Newmaster of Cedar Rapids; a daughter Janel Timmins of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren; a sister, Mary Mitchell of North Bend, Ore.; and a brother, Herbert Newmaster of Alexandria, Va.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mark Newmaster.
Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Visitation with the Rev. Robert Striegel officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Military services will be conducted by Walter B. Shager Post No. 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 of the American Legion.
Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials have been established to the Ottumwa Public Library or St. Mary of the Visitation.
