I am trying to find out my great-great grandmother's name. My great-grandmother Florence Belle Henry was born 26 Nov 1874 in Ottumwa, Wapello, IA. She was the daughter of John Wessley Henry. Unfortunately, I do not know the name of Florence's mother. My grandmother stated in her personal history that her mother's mother died in child birth. I have Census records for John W. and Florence in Ottumwa, IA for 1880, 1900 and 1910. In 1880, he is a widower. He did not remarry until Florence was older. By 1900, we see his wife (Catherine or Kathryn). The original census in 1900 shows that Catherine did not have any children.
John Wessley Henry was born Feb 1845 in Pennsylvania. He died between 1910-1915. He fought in the Civil war and was captured in 1864. He was held at Andersonville Prison and survived his ordeal. The next known record I have for him is the 1880 Census record. He was a carpenter by trade. His granddaughter remembered visiting John W. Henry and his second wife, (Catherine or Kathryn) Henry. They owned a mill and lived in a U-shaped house in Ottumwa.
(Catherine or Kathryn) S. (?) was born Jul 1848 in Massachussets. She married John Wessley Henry about 1886? in what I assume was Ottumwa (since John and Florence were living there). She continued to live in Ottumwa after she was widowed (Iowa State Census 1915). The last census record I have for her is the 1920 U.S. Federal Census record. She is 71 and living as a "roomer" in Ottumwa "Ward 6".
I have been researching this line, but I am stuck. I have tried to find out more information on-line, but I have been unsuccessful finding a birth record for Florence, an Obituary/Death/or Cemetery record for John W. Henry or Catherine S. Henry. I haven't been able to find a marriage record either. I have even tried finding more information through researching more about millwrights and carpenters in Wapello during 1870-1900.
Without knowing specific dates for marriages and deaths, I'm not sure how to order or find vital statistics for this line.
Do you have any suggestions of where I might go or who to contact to get these records?
If you have the time, I would really appreciate hearing your recommendations on how I might obtain this information.
Sincerely,
LB
