BATAVIA - Funeral services for Gaston DeSpiegelaere, 80, veteran Batavia horticulturist and businessman, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Eldon. The Rev. William Kaska will officiate.
DeSpiegelaere died suddenly Wednesday morning at his home. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery. Prayers for a Christian Wake will be Friday, 8 p.m., at the Campbell Funeral HOme in Eldon.
DeSpiegelaere was born Oct. 1, 1897 in Aalter, Belgium, the son of Henry and Eugenie Van Dyke Despkegelaere(err). He married Bertha Smessaert Sept. 25, 1920.
The couple came to the United States that same year and lived in Fairfield until moving to Batavia where they established Batavia Gardens in 1928.
DeSpiegelaere served four years in the Belgian army in WWI. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, and an honorary life member of Elks Lodge 1192 and Knights of Columbus, both of Fairfield.
Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. John Nickelson and one son, Robert, both of Batavia; seven granddaughters and one grandson; one sister, Zulma Schollaert of Gent, Belgium.
