Mrs Daniel Whitsel, Mary Vance Buck was born in Benton County, Ohio, on May 13, 1820, a child of Chas and Maria Buck. On the 28th of April, 1840 she was united in marriage to Daniel Whitsel. In the fall of 1853, they left Ohio and came to Eddyville. In February of 1858 they located in East Des Moines Twp., Born to the couple were 13 children, 2 of whom died in Ohio, 3 while the family lived at Bridgeport. The 8 surviving are Thomas Benton of Givin; Hiram and Jasper of Oskaloosa; Maria, wife of John Bucher, Emma, wife of Wm Crews of Albia; Mary, Wife of Rod Ellis, Almeda, wife of James Harris, and Nancy, wife of W P Chilton, all of East Des Moines township. Mrs Whitsel is survived by 26 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. A brother, James Buck of Portland, Oregon and a sister Mrs Elizabeth Stoner of Des Moines. her death on October 18, 1910, allowed her to reach 90 years of age. Funeral services were conducted at the residence and burial followed in Henness Cemetery.
