David Nelson Price was born July 10, 1865 in Keokuk, Iowa to Richard Price and Mary Nelson of Wales and Ohio respectively. At the time Keokuk was a thriving port along the Mississippi River. David's father was a carpenter and died at the age of 48 in 1876, living a widow with three children. David didn't have much of a childhood and is listed as living on his own by the age of 13-14. He is listed in the Keokuk city directory for 1879-80 as a boarder. In the 1880 census for Keokuk, Iowa, he is listed as age 14 with an occupation as working in a bakery. David later moved to Eldon, Iowa, where he continued the occupation of a baker and had his own store and cafe. He married Maymie Sophia Elmore in 1889 in Eldon and they raised four children, Myrtle Anna Price (Hodson), Leta Elmore Price (Ahre), William David, and Margaret Beatrice Price (Wingfield); all were born and raised in Eldon. After David Price and Maymie were married, they lived in Eldon, Iowa, except for one year, when they ran a cafe and bakery in Deerwood, Minnesota. After the early death of his wife in 1922, David lived an additional 27 years. He was known to be quite ornery and not a very attentive father to his youngest children, Bill and Margaret, after his wife's death. The children moved out of their father's home shortly there after, and both initially went to live with their sister, Myrtle. A preacher and his wife later lived with David Price in his house, basically for nothing, except to give him some companionship, and took most of his possessions. When David Price became too much of a burden for the preacher, his daughter, Myrtle, took him into her home to take care of him during his last days. He died of a coronary thrombosis on March 26, 1949, and is buried in the Eldon cemetery. Sources: Obituary, census records, Keokuk city directory, family history from his children.
