Rev. Ulrich read the following obituary:
Oscar John Smith was born Oct. 15th, 1873, on the Smith homestead five miles southwest of Story City and, after a brief illness, died at his home in Story City November 23, 1942, at the age of 69 years, 1 month and 9 days.Mr. Smith lived his whole life with his sisters and brothers at the farm home of his birth, until four years ago, when he and his sister, Mary, moved to Story City, where he spent the remainder of his days on earth.
Oscar Smith was preceded in death by three sisters: Elizabeth, Cora Belle and Sarah Jane, and two brothers: Charles Ammin and Oliver Perry. Surviving his death are one brother, James Monroe of Story City, and two sisters, Mary Alice of Story City and Mrs. Harrison Jackson of Anamosa, and other relatives and friends.
Oscar Smith lived a quiet life. Today we are reminded that whether we live our lives in quietness on the soil of in social turmoil, we must one day go the way of all flesh. Death is no respecter of persons, but
"Death comes with reckless footsteps
To the hall and hut;
Think ye that death will tarry knocking
When the door is shut?"
