OBITUARY

MRS. OVERLAND-JOHNSON

Mrs. Bertha Jacobson Overland-Johnson was born in Mahaska county, Iowa, in 1868. History repeating itself, her daughter, Ludie, cared for her as she had cared for her own mother the last years of her life. She passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Byron Holt, near Webster City, July 8, 1942, at the age of 74 years, 5 months and 27 days after a long illness.

She was a daughter of Lars and Cecelia Jacobson (Boken), who have passed on before her and four brothers, John, Dan and James Jacobson and Rev. Swen Jacobson, also one sister, Mrs. Carrie Thompson, have preceded her in death. There is one remaining brother, Rev. L. C. Jacobson of Ada, Minn.

At the age of eight years she moved with her parents, who pioneered on farm 7 miles northwest of Story City. This farm is still in the family.

She was confirmed in a little church west of Story City, and was united in marriage in 1890 to Edward J. Overland. To this union five children were born. Her husband and two children--Selid and Cora Crisman--preceded her in death. There are three children remaining: Selid Overland of Des Moines, Mrs. Byron Holt of Webster City and Emil J. Overland, now in the U.S. Army.

She continued living on the farm until 1906, when she was united in marriage to James S. Johnson and moved to Story City. Mr. Johnson passed away in 1910. In this marriage she acquired 4 stepchildren: John Johnson of Minneapolis, Clarence Johnson of Oklahoma, Mrs. Anna Niles of Milo, and Mrs. Helen Johnson of Story City.

She also leaves four grandchildren: Beatrice Crisman, Edward and Dean Holt, and Donald, son of Emil.

Funeral services were held at the Holt home and in the Immanuel church in Story City, on Monday, July 13. Interment was made in the Overland lot here. The casket bearers at Webster City were: Wes Miller, Leon Davis, Wm. Riley, Fred Stahl, Roy Hayes and Frank Webb. At Story City the following acted as casket bearers: Serral Munsen, John Ose, Chas. Wier, Eli Olson, John Sunnoe and John Johnson.

Rev. S. B. Knutson of Duncombe officiated, preaching the sermon at the funeral, and short addresses were also made by Rev. Hans Oppedal and the deceased's brother, Rev. L. C. Jacobson. Mrs. Lester Henderson sang a solo, and she and Mrs. Benjamin Anderson sang a duet, with Louise Olson at the organ.

Among the out of town people at the funeral were Wm. Riley, Mrs. Fred Stahl and Keith of Webster City, Mrs. B. C. Dalva, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Johnson, Anna Lewison Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Overland, Jasper Overland and Junior and Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Thompson, all of Jewell; Mr. and Mrs. Ole Endreland of Thompson, Rev. L. C. Jacobson of Ada, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Floyd of Albion, Dewey Jacobson of Marshalltown; Mrs. Wm. Hudson and daughter of Montezuma; Beatrice Crisman of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. John T. Johnson of Randall; Mr. and Mrs. Van Niles of Milo; Mrs. Tom Mosness and Mrs. Nellie Alber of Ames.
