LaVerne Florence Hughes Madock, 91, of Hawarden, Iowa, passed away October 20, 2024, at Hillcrest Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa. A funeral service will be held Thursday, October 24 at 12:00 p.m., with a visitation 1 hour prior at First Baptist Church in Hawarden. Burial will be at Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.

LaVerne Florence Hughes Madock was born September 7, 1933, to Gustav and Emma (Schneider) Berreth in Scotland South Dakota. On June 22, 1949, she married George Hughes and together they had 8 children. She later married Dick Madock on February 20, 1987.

LaVerne’s main focus was raising her children. LaVerne worked as a waitress at Toms Cafe and Johns Place in Hawarden, at Otis Radio for many years and also as a cook at Hillcrest. She especially enjoyed being a waitress. LaVerne moved to Hawarden as a child in 1943. She lived in Hawarden most of her life except for 10 years in the 1980s when she lived in Melrose Park Illinois. In 1974 she graduated with her GED alongside her daughter Penny, an accomplishment she was proud of. For over seventy 70 years she was friends with the late Delores Jurrens of Hawarden. LaVerne liked to play Bingo and was an avid reader. LaVerne retired in 1995 and spent her time with her husband and traveling to Colorado to visit family. LaVerne loved Country music especially Johnny Cash.

LaVerne is survived by her sons, Charlie (Laura Beanie) Hughes of Hawarden, Denny (Julia) Hughes of Littleton, Colorado and Jeff (Lil Herum) Hughes of Estherville, Iowa; daughters, Georgia Opsahl of Addison Illinois, Karen Longhorn and fiancée David Reed of Hawarden, and Carol (Tom) Hegarty of Lone Tree, Colorado, her brother, Rudy (Jackie) Berreth of Sioux Falls, LaVerne is also survived by countless grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dick; daughters, Linda Ann Hughes and Penelope (Penny) Myers; brother and sister-in-law, Louie and Dorrie Berreth; sisters, Dorothy Schneider, Alma and her husband Harry Spencer, Frieda and her husband George Menkens; and son-in-law, Glen Longhorn.
