Mr. Myles Magaril, age 71, of Alton, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center in Sioux City.
A visitation celebrating his life will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Myles Lee was born on December 11, 1952, in Brooklyn, New York. He was the youngest of two children born to Bernard and Ruth Magaril. At age nine, his family moved to Queens, New York, where he attended P.S. 207 Rockwood Park School. He graduated from John Adams High School in Ozone Park, New York.
At a young age, Myles used his entrepreneurial skills to earn money by taking lunch orders and delivering them to the local construction workers. On one of his visits to Happy’s Deli, a Life Magazine photographer took photos of Myles eating a frankfurter. One of those photos became a billboard advertising the deli. From a very early age, Myles had an uncanny ability to take things apart and make something new. Occasionally, he would even get things put back together. In the summer of 1969, at the age of sixteen, Myles attended the famed Woodstock Music Festival. In the summer of 1971, Myles and a friend backpacked across Europe. As a young adult, Myles moved to Tucson, Arizona. He worked for several years as a maintenance technician for 3M. It was there that he met the love of his life, Susan.
On July 6, 1991, he married Susan R. Stonefield in Tucson, where they made their home and started their family. In 1998, they moved to Alton to be closer to family. Myles retired in 2023 from Pella Windows and Doors in Sioux Center. He had worked there for 23 years as an engineering support technician. Before this, he also worked at Wells Dairy in Le Mars and Smithfield in Orange City.
Myles had a knack for fixing things and simplifying any task. He found joy in listening to music and experimenting in the kitchen. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his family and friends. Myles had recently planned and was in the process of constructing an oversized storage shed or “man cave.” He took great pride in it and was anticipating its completion. Myles will mostly be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor.
Grateful to have shared his life are his wife of over 33 years, Susan, of Alton; two sons, Ryan Magaril, of Orange City; and Jordan Magaril, of Sheldon; a sister, Pam Katz, of Merrick, New York; Susan’s mother, Arlene Stonefield; Susan’s sisters, Nancy Stonefield; Rhonda Gordy; Sharyl (David) Rice; Cindy Stonefield; Sharon (Doug) Wildeboer; Shelly (Tony Patrick) Kroeger; twelve nieces and nephews; 32 great-nieces and great-nephews; one great-great-niece; and one great-great-nephew.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Susan’s father, Roucal Stonefield; a brother-in-law, Brian Katz; and a nephew, Douglas Fossum, Jr.
