A visitation with the family present will be held on Sunday, October 27, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. A prayer service will take place on Monday, October 28, at 10:00am, at the church, followed by interment at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. There will be a memorial service on Monday, at 11:00am, at the church with the Rev. Adam Van Der Stoep and Pastor Ross Van Kley officiating. The Oolman Funeral Home in Hull is in charge of arrangements.

James Craig was born on January 13, 1953, in Orange City, the youngest of two children born to Nelson and Dorothy (Moret) Bynes. He was raised on a farm between Alton and Hospers, until his father became ill, and his family moved to Orange City. Jim attended the Hospers and Floyd Valley Schools and graduated from the Maurice–Orange City High School in 1972.

On June 14, 1974, he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Barbara Van Peursem, at the First Reformed Church in Maurice. They briefly made their home in Boyden before settling in Hull, where they raised their family, and Jim owned and operated the Handy Grocery Store. After selling the grocery store, he worked as a meat cutter at the Hy-Vee Grocery Store in Sioux Center, and at Van’s Super Foods in Rock Valley. He later worked as a salesman for Echo Inc. in Sioux Center, and after retiring, he drove the Rides van in Sioux Center for a brief period, ending after he suffered from a stroke.

Mr. Bynes was a member of the First Reformed Church in Hull, where he served as a deacon and an elder. He was currently serving as part of the church’s Ministry of Visitation. He and Barb routinely visited members of the congregation that lived in care facilities and assisted living centers and were unable to attend worship in person. He was also active in the men’s Bible study and was an RCYF sponsor.

Jim treasured the time he was able to spend with his family and friends. He was so proud of his grandchildren and regularly attended their various extracurricular activities. He liked to go fishing with Barb and enjoyed the family vacations they went on throughout the years. More recently he and Barb looked forward to spending time in Arizona during the winter months.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Barb, of Hull; a daughter and her husband, Sara and Scott Grevengoed, of Hull; two sons, Craig Bynes, and his fiancé, Kristie Craig, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Chad Bynes, and his wife, Amber, of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Mackelle Grevengoed, of Sioux Falls; Ashlyn Grevengoed, of Hull; and Brennan Bynes and Olive Bynes, both of Sleepy Eye; a step-brother, Rodney Kleinwolterink, of Sioux City; a step-sister and her husband, Judy and Ken Rawlings, of River Falls, Wisconsin; and Barb’s two sisters and their husbands, Kathy and Bill Van Marel, and Lori and Ray Van Gorp, all of Orange City; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Peter Kleinwolterink; Barb’s parents, Marion and Sadie Van Peursem; a sister and her husband, Louetta and Ron Van Meekeren; and a step-sister-in-law, Rose-Marie Kleinwolterink.

Memorials will be given to the Building Fund and the Missions Fund of the First Reformed Church in Hull.
