Richard “Dick” Gettler, age 91, of Hospers, passed away on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at Crown Pointe Estates in Sioux Center.
A visitation with the family present will be held on Saturday, December 28, from 9:00am to 10:00am, at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hospers. Interment will follow the service at the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Hospers. The Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers is in charge of arrangements.
Richard Lee was born in rural Carroll on October 1, 1933, the tenth of thirteen children born to William and Mary Rose (Mosman) Gettler. He grew up on a farm near Coon Rapids and attended the public school. After graduating in 1953, “Dick” began working as a farm hand and helping with some local construction projects. In 1955, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea. Following his honorable discharge in 1957, he enrolled in Barber College in Sioux City before purchasing the barber shop in Coon Rapids.
On October 14, 1961, he was united in marriage to Virginia Lou Hulsing in Mount Carmel. Together they made their home in Bayard and were soon blessed with two daughters, Julie and Janet. In 1973, Dick purchased the barber shops in downtown Hospers and Granville, and the family moved to Hospers. He later relocated the barber shop to their home in Hospers, where he continued to cut hair until retiring his license at the age of 89. Since May of this year, Dick has been a resident of Crown Pointe Estates.
Mr. Gettler was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hospers. He looked forward to working outside, meticulously maintaining his lawn and tending to his vegetable garden, rhubarb patch, and sunflowers. He enjoyed playing card games and horseshoes. Above all, he loved spending time with his family, camping together in earlier years, and more recently, playing bean bag toss with his grandchildren. His pleasant nature and wholesome sense of humor will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and countless customers.
He is survived by his wife of more than 63 years, “Ginnie”, of Hospers; his two daughters and their husbands, Julie and Patrick Jacobs, of North Mankato, Minnesota; and Janet and Kevin Richter, of Hospers; five grandchildren, Brittney Carlberg, Brady Carlberg, Megan Schuld, Cory Richter, and Spencer Richter; four great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Paytin, Brooklyn, and Alivia; a sister and her husband, Laura and Dennis Barber; and two brothers, Larry Gettler and Danny Gettler; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Irma Mueller, Glenna Heiderschiet, and Mary Lou Short; and six brothers, Greg Gettler, Gerald Gettler, Vernon Gettler, Walter Gettler, Paul Gettler, and Billy Gettler.
Memorials will be given to the fundraising efforts for a new Emergency Services Facility in Hospers.
