Mrs. Kathleen “Kay” Wesseling, age 82, of Orange City, formerly of Sheldon, passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Wednesday, September 4, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Redeemer United Reformed Church in Orange City. A graveside service will take place on Thursday, September 5, at 1:15pm, at the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon. There will be a memorial service on Thursday, at 2:30pm, at the church with Rev. Todd De Rooy officiating. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

Kathleen Cecilia was born on September 4, 1941, on a farm near Ashton, the oldest of six children born to Dick and Pearl (De Vries) Hofman. They moved south of Sanborn where she grew up in the Sanborn Christian Reformed Church, went to Sanborn Christian School and Western Christian High School in Hull, graduating in 1959.

On March 1, 1961, she was united in marriage to Henry Bousema of Sheldon, the youngest of nine children. They made their home in Grand Island, Nebraska, where “Hank” was employed at Kinney Shoes Corporation, now Footlocker. Later, they moved to Mason City, and then to Sheldon, where Hank was employed at Carl's Footwear and Kay was employed at Iowa Public Service, now known as Mid-American Energy. In 1973, they purchased Carl's Footwear and in 1974, they bought The Grey Shop, in Sheldon, and renamed it Mr. B’s and then added Mr. B's Kids. Later, they opened Lady B's, The Carriage Shoppe and the Cornerstone. “Kay” liked working in the stores and getting to know the customers. Her grandchildren were always very well dressed thanks to her generosity of clothing from Mr. B’s Kids. When they had time, she and Hank enjoyed traveling. Kay and Hank were members of First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon. In June of 1991, Hank was diagnosed with bladder cancer and he passed away in July of 1995.

On August 16, 1996, Kay married Rev. Jay Wesseling and they made their home in Jenison, Michigan, where Jay did full-time pulpit supply. After four years, they relocated to Sheldon. Kay and Jay were members of Sanborn United Reformed Church for many years. Together, they enjoyed traveling wherever Jay was needed for pulpit supply. They were quite the church team- Kay playing psalms and hymns on the organ and Jay behind the pulpit. Jay passed away in November of 2014.

In 2020, Kay moved to Orange City and became a member of Redeemer United Reformed Church. She enjoyed playing dominoes with a group of ladies from church and getting visits from family and friends. In May of 2023, she became a resident of the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City. Kay's favorite psalm was Psalm 46. We are comforted and confident to know that she is with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven.

Survivors include her three sons and their wives, Mark and Elsie Bousema, of Escondido, California; Joel and Amy Bousema, of Sheldon; and Nathan and Kari Bousema, of Orange City; twelve grandchildren, Jordan (Kelsey) Bousema, Jocelyn (Jeff) Marguin, Casey (Adrianna) Bousema, Thomas (fianceé Kimmy Voortman) Bousema, Kenzie (Parker) Mulder, Katie (Joseph) Bartels, Erica (fiancé Max Kresek) Bousema, Luke Bousema, Emma (Jesse) Jansma, Summer (Ethan) Hoekstra, Autumn Bousema, and Joshua Bousema; ten great-grandchildren; six step-children and their spouses, Karen and Peter Bottema, David and Vonda Van Beek, Ellen and Wilbur Vander Linden, Mary and Joseph Owens, James and Joann Wesseling, and Lisa and Russell Westenbroek; 18 step-grandchildren; 31 step-great-grandchildren; her brothers, Gordon Hofman, Arlen (Mary) Hofman, David Hofman, and Jason (Lynda) Hofman; a sister, Nancy (John) Gosselink; and sisters-in-law, Veda Bousema, Marie Bousema, Marlene Bousema, Greta Bomgaars, and Carol Bousema.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Laurie Van Beek; a step-grandson; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Vonnie Hofman, Rachel Hofman, Bill Bousema, John Bousema, Rich (Wilma) Bousema, Art Bousema, Nick Bomgaars, Gert (Jack) Littel, Roy Bousema, Bernie (Gwen) Bousema, Jessie (James) Platschore, Sidney (Gertrude) Wesseling and Stuart (Alice) Wesseling.

Memorials will be given to Orange City Christian School and Sheldon Christian School.
