Verlyn Gene was born March 28, 1951, in Orange City, the oldest of two sons born to Gerrit and Harriet (Vander Meer) Fedders, Jr. He grew up in Orange City and was a student at the Orange City Elementary School and the Maurice-Orange City High School. Following his graduation in 1969, Verlyn spent one year as a student at Northwestern College in Orange City before enrolling at Nettleton Business School in Sioux City and Sioux Falls, where he studied accounting.
Verlyn initially worked as a bookkeeper for The Van Iperen Elevator in Hospers until accepting a position at K-Products in Orange City, where he met his future wife, Melinda Kay Kraai. Verlyn and Melinda were married on August 8, 1987, at the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. Together they made their home in Orange City, and Verlyn continued to work as a bookkeeper at K-Products and later at Sioux Automation in Sioux Center, retiring in 2019.
Mr. Fedders was a former member of the Trinity Reformed Church and was currently a member of the First Reformed Church, where he regularly served as a greeter and helped with the college student breakfasts prior to Sunday worship. Verlyn was also a member of the Orange City Lion’s Club, and in earlier years he participated in a local bowling league and was a pitcher for the Sioux Merchants softball team. In more recent years, he regularly helped run the score board and shot clock for MOC-Floyd Valley and Northwestern College football and basketball games. He looked forward to spending time with his family at West Lake Okoboji and would often volunteer on Thursday nights at the Roof Garden Ballroom at Arnolds Park. He liked to play golf, was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Dallas Cowboys, and enjoyed numerous bus trips around the country with Melinda.
