January 05, 1925 ~ February 26, 2018Funeral services for Doris Maye Crecelius, who passed away February 26, 2018, at the Bedford Nursing and Rehab center in Bedford, were held Friday, March 2, 2018, 11 a.m., at the Cummings Family Funeral Home in Bedford. Visitation was held Friday from 9:30 until service time. Interment was held at the Maple Row Cemetery in Kellerton, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to The Bedford Senior Center or Care Initiatives Hospice. Cummings Family Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements for Mrs. Crecelius. Doris Maye (Keller) Crecelius was born January 5, 1925, near Lamoni, Iowa, the second of eight children, to Glenn and Opal (Waddell) Keller. Doris grew up near Tingley and Diagonal until moving to Kellerton in 1937 where she attended school and graduated in 1942.
Upon her graduation Doris taught at Cornstalk School, a one-room schoolhouse in Ringgold County. On July 22, 1943 Doris was united in marriage to Harold Cecil Crecelius in Redding, Iowa. Two children, Gene and Gary were born to this blessed union. Harold and Doris purchased their farm in the fall of 1945 near Platteville, Iowa. Life on the farm was much different from today. Their Model A Ford was essential for transportation since most of the roads weren’t graveled. A wood stove was used for heating as well. Doris raised a large garden for summer use as well as canning and preserving for the winter. Doris also raised chickens for eggs and fryers. She and Harold also had milk cows to provide milk, cream, and butter. The extra cream and eggs were sold on Saturday night for their weekly grocery shopping.
Through the years Harold and Doris were busy raising livestock and row crops until Harold’s death in 1969. Doris continued to live on the farm until 1992, when she moved to Bedford. Doris worked many places including the Blockton Locker, Skylark Cafe, Gamble’s and Shehan’s. Doris also enjoyed volunteering at the Bedford Nursing Home where she would later reside. Doris was also a member of the United Methodist Church.
Doris’ greatest enjoyment was attending the many family reunions they would have. She had a great memory and could always recite birth dates and names of each family member of all of her siblings and their families.
Left to cherish Doris’ memory are son Gary Lee and wife Lorraine Crecelius; daughter-in-law, Gwen Crecelius; brother-in-laws, Dale Campbell and Jack Greene; sister-in-law, Leora Keller; grandchildren, Jennifer (Aric) Attrill, Kim Crecelius, Amy (Mike) Ciccotti, Lee (Aimee) Crecelius, David (Chrissy) Crecelius, and Chad (Kayla) Crecelius; step-grandchildren, Ronee Wagener (Paul Andersen), Cassie Russell (Barry Rolow); 12 great grandchildren, Caitlyn, Derrick, Abby, Emily, Garett, Jayden, Ruby, Haley, Olive, Claire, Eleanor, and Evan; two step-great-grandchilden, Brandal and Daylan along with many other nieces, nephews and friends.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Harold; son, Gene; her parents; siblings Donald (Alice) Keller, Darlene (Willard) White, Derma Jean Campbell, Maxine (Dick) Franklin; Marvin Keller, Lila Dell Greene, and Glenn Keller in infancy.
