Funeral services for Charley Benson CORTNER, 74 of Blockton, held October 6 at the Blockton Christian Church, were conducted by Rev. G. W. SWAN. Mr. CORTNER died October 4, 1972 in the Ringgold County Hospital in Mt Ayr. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery in Blockton.
Charles Benson CORTNER, son of [Lawrence] Elmer [Benson] and Susan [Frances] ARGO CORTNER, was born in Taylor County, Iowa February 26,1874.
He grew up in the Blockton community, except eight years he spent in Oklahoma. When eight years old he came back to Blockton, where he has resided until his passing.
On August 19, 1931, he was united in marriage to Lula Elsie HINTON, at Grant City, Missouri. To this union were born three children Shirley, Johanna and Doyle.
The family came back to Blockton in 1959 from the farm, as Charles was forced to give up this occupation due to ill health.
He was a member of the Blockton Christian Church. While in Blockton he was glad to visit with friends and was patient in his suffering.
Those surviving include: his wife, Lula, of the home; mother (98 years old) living in a nursing home in Baldwin Park, Calif.; daughters: Shirley E[ileen]. CORTNER and husband of De Sota, Iowa; Johanna M[ae]. MINICHOVICZ and husband [Raymond] of Chula Vista, California, Doyle Dean and wife of Blockton, Ia.; brothers: Harvey and David CORTNER of Calif.; Jim CORTNER of Audubon, Ia., Alfred CORTNER of Winterset, Ia.; sister: May ATKINSON of Ramona, Calif.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
One sister, Mary, preceded him in death.
