DEATH of JOHN DUNLAP.

Mr. John DUNLAP, one of the oldest citizens of Ringgold county, died at the home of his son William in Jefferson township on Thursday, August 11th, 1898. Mr. DUNLAP had passed the seventy-fourth anniversary of his birthday. He was born March 24, 1824, in county Tyrone, Ireland. He spent his early years in the place of his birth. When about eighteen years of age he came to America and settled at Troy, N.Y., and for some time lived in that vicinity. He was married to Miss Margaret BUCK, who passed away about eleven years ago. To them were born two sons, Robert and William, and one daughter, Mrs. T. A. STEVENSON. Again he was married to Miss [Rebecca] JARVIS and by this marriage had one son, John DUNLAP. The wife and mother died yearly, leaving the husband and son alone.

Mr. DUNLAP came to Ringgold county from Ohio in the spring of 1858 and settled near what was then known as Eugene. He took up a large tract of land and eventually became prominent as a stock raiser and buyer. He was an enterprising business citizen and went far and near in the pursuit of his avocation. He possessed much public spirit and did a great deal in the way of helping to settle the new country and develop it. He spent time and means in presenting favorable inducements to the early settlers. The U. P. church at Eugene and its successors at Tingley and Shannon City, no doubt owe much to John DUNLAP. He helped greatly to bring and settle a substantial class of people.

He helped also in keeping business on the move among them. Although not himself a member of that church, he generously supported all benevolent schemes with his means, and his house was a home for all strangers. In 1878 he moved to a farm near Mt. Ayr. This soon became a burden to him in his declining years and he moved into town and kept up his busy habits by running a livery stable. Falling sick some weeks ago he was taken to the homes of his daughter, Mrs. T. A. STEVENSON and son William, where his days ended. Late in life he had at one time associated with the Mt. Ayr, Baptist church. The funeral took place from the home of his son William, Friday, August 12, and was conducted by Rev. John WILLIAMSON, of Tingley. The remains were laid in the Eugene cemetery. He was noted for his honorable business habits and was in mid-life a useful businessman.
