The Brooklyn Chronicle, Brooklyn, Iowa, October 8, 1897
Died at her home in Jefferson township Saturday Oct. 2nd, 1897, of a complication of diseases, Mrs. Synthia Houck, aged 70 years, 8 months and 2 days. Synthia Kent was born in Putnam county, Indiana, Jan. 30, 1827 and came to Iowa with her parents in Nov. 1855. She was united in marriage with Thomas Houck, March 10th, 1856. By this union four children were born, three sons and one daughter. All with the husband survive to mourn the loss of a loving mother and devoted wife. She was happily converted in early life and joined the Methodist church and has always lived a life consistent with her christian belief. She was a great sufferer for many years, but bore her trials with patience. She called the family to her bedside a few days before she died and bid them goodbye and said that she was a happy woman and hoped that she would meet them all in heaven. Three of her children and three sisters were with her at the time of her death. The funeral services were held Sunday at 3 o'clock at the Kent school house, conducted by Rev. Dr. Busby, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Kent cemetery, near the home she loved so well. She is "Gone but not forgotten."
