Rites Held For Long Time Gaza Area Resident

Funeral services for David Hartong, 71, a resident of the Gaza area since 1926, were held Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2:00 p.m., at the Methodist Church in Paullina, under the direction of Rev. John R. Kirby and Rev. Sam Polovina. A quartet, consisting of Howard Tiemens, Robert Bornholdt, Harrison Fisch, and Donald Fritzsche, sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden", accompanied on the organ by Miss Ruth Fickle.

Pallbearers were, Orren Tjossem, Elmer Lake, Emil Rehder, Eric Stark, Harold Conn, and Ray Ginger. Flowers were arranged by Mrs. Albert Weathers and Mrs. Mila Click.

Graveside Masonic rites were conducted by Rising Star Lodge 496 A.F. & A.M., Robert Bornholdt, W. M.

Interment was made in Prairie View Cemetery, Paullina, under the direction of Baumgarten Service.

David Hartong, the son of Charles and Ada Fouser Hartong, was born June 14, 1892, at Arthur, Iowa, and passed away August 31, 1963, at his home at Gaza, Iowa. He was 71 years, 2 months, and 17 days of age.

For 34 years he lived in Ida County, where he attended school and later farmed. In 1925 he came to the Gaza Community and farmed until his retirement in 1960 when he moved into Gaza.

On March 9, 1910, he was united in marriage to Signa Peterson at Ida Grove, Iowa. To this, union four children were born.

He was a member of the Gaza Methodist Church, the Ben Hur Masonic Lodge No. 511, of Arthur, the Royal Arch Masons Samara Chapter No. 105, the Primghar Chapter of Order of Eastern Star No. 241, and attended the Rising Star Lodge No. 496 of Primghar.

Preceding him in death were his parents, an infant daughter, Gladys and a brother, Ira.

Survivors include his wife Signa, a daughter, Viola (Mrs. Joseph Schneider) of Meredosia, Illinois; a son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Hazel Hartong, of Gaza; a daughter, Lois, (Mrs. Glenn Tjossem) of Primghar, nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Volz and Hazel Arbegast of Arthur, numerous other relatives and many friends.
