Mr. Jurgen Petersen was born on June 26th, 1858 in Schleswig Holstein, Germany, and passed away at his home in Hartley on April 12, 1939 at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 17 days. His early life and youth were spent in the fatherland, where he was educated and received his early religious instructions, being baptized and confirmed in the Treia Kreis Church, Schleswig Holstein, Germany.
On July 1, 1880, he landed in America and settled in the midwest, in Scott county, Walcott, Iowa. While residing there he was married to Mary Clausen on February 24, 1887. In that locality, the young couple continued to farm and remained there for thirteen years, after which they moved to Osceola county, where they purchased another farm and lived there for fifteen years, after which they retired and moved to Hartley, building their own home. They have been residents of Hartley for 24 years.
Jurgen Petersen is survived by his good wife, Mary; two daughters, Mrs. Annie Steuben of Hartley, and Mrs. Alma Zaiser of Hartley; three sons, Hugo, Edward and Harry, all of Hartley; one brother, Thomas of Ulen, Minnesota; 4 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; two sons-in-law; three daughters-in-law, and many other relatives and a host of friends.
Two years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Jurgen Petersen were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary.
Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon at the Trinity church with Rev.G.A. Pahl, Jr., officiating. Interment was made in Pleasant View cemetery. G.U. Foley had charge of arrangements.
