April 8, 1987 - The Tipton Conservative
Charlene Nesbit, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Nesbit, Atalissa, was pronounced dead at Muscatine General Hospital April 6. Death was due to smoke inhalation.
The 13-month old child was taken from a smoke-filled bedroom by members of the Atalissa fire department after her mother, Becky, was forced to go back downstairs by the intense smoke.
Firemen took the girl from her crib and brought her outside where CPR was performed. The girl was later taken to the Muscatine hospital by ambulance.
A spokesman for the Muscatine county sheriff's department said that the fire was believed caused by a 3-year old boy playing with a lighter and had set fire to a pillow. The Nesbit home is located a mile east of Atalissa on a county gravel road.
The Atalissa fire department answered the call at 11 a.m. The girl was received at the hospital at 12:15 p.m.
