In Response To: Mills County Farm Cemetery (Connie Allan)

In regards to the location of the County Farm / County Poor Farm Cemetery, I found maps on the Mills County iagenweb.org site under the Atlas tab on the left side.

On the 1910 plat map and 1947 plat map, the poor farm area is shown in the southeast corner of Section 16 on the Center Township map.

I also checked the Mills County Cemetery Book and found the County Farm was listed under early burials and smaller burial sites. This is what was written in the cemetery book: Taken from obituary in the "Mills County Tribune", Glenwood of 18 Aug 1904, PETER HOLMES, of Swedish ancestry, aged 84 years, died at the county farm 14 Aug 1904. Mr. Lewis, the farm steward, said he was quite a worker and more than paid his way the 16 years. Relatives unknown. The obituary concludes that he was buried in the county cemetery on the farm "about one-quarter of a mile south of the building.

It is said there are about 75 people buried there."

NOTE: I also did a Google search on Mills County Iowa township maps and did find a 1930 Mills County plat map online with which shows the county farm listed. As to when it was abandoned, I haven't found anything yet on it, so anytime after the 1947 plat book was published. To my knowledge there are no cemetery records available otherwise the names would have been listed in the Mills County Cemetery book published in December 1982. I drive past that location numerous times each week. There is nothing that indicates that a poor farm or cemetery existed there, I just see corn or beans the farmer plants each year.
