Pearl, the 12—year-old daughter of Elmer Conard, of Martensdale, was killed about 9 o’clock Saturday evening. She and her sister Gladys had been spending the evening at the Marion Conard home and were on their way to their own home. They were walking along the sidewalk and a boy on a bicycle rode up behind them. It was dark and no one knows just exactly what did happen, but as nearly as can be learned, the girls stepped off the walk to get out of the way of the bicycle, just as the boy turned off the walk to go around them, and so ran into the girls. The girls were thrown out into the road. Pearl’s neck was broken and she died almost instantly. Her body was severely bruised and it looked as if the bicycle had run over her. Gladys was cut and bruised about the head and shoulders and it was feared, at first, that she had been hurt internally.

Funeral services were held at Martensdale Monday and interment made in the St. Charles cemetery by the side of her mother who died just a few months ago. This surely was a very unfortunate occurrence and Mr. Conard has the sincere sympathy of the people of the community.
