Hannah Retta Leota Haltom, the daughter of John and Catherine Marker, was born in Lucas county, Iowa, Nov. 13, 1864, and departed this life at the Harmon nursing home in Chariton, Sept. 9, 1954, at the age of 89 years, nine months and 27 days.
During her last illness she was very patient and her faith in the Lord inspired all who were with her.
She was united in marriage to Richard Spencer Haltom, Dec. 30, 1884, and to this union was born nine children. Those surviving are: Bertha Anderson, Cora Show, Elsie Davidson, Carrie Shelton and Archie of Chariton, Minnie Dixon of Des Moines, Ernest of Detroit, Mich., Olin of Jackson, Mich., and one step-son, Ellis of Creston.
She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, on February 22, 1931, one son, Johnnie and four step-sons, Edward, Bert, Frank and Jim.
Besides her living children, two sisters, Lydia Nine and Minnie Roberts, one sister-in-law, Mrs. Eva Sylvara of Chariton, survive her. There are also 44 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, besides many other relatives and friends.
She led a very active life and was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to others in time of need.
She lived her entire life in Lucas and Warren counties, living the last 37 years in Chariton. She became affiliated with the U. B. church of Norwood in 1912 and was a member of the U. B. church in Chariton at the time of her death.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 12, at 2:30 p.m. at the Miley Chapel, conducted by the Rev. H. E. Hegstrom. Burial was in the Chariton cemetery.
