R. S. HALTOM

R. S. Haltom, well-known Chariton citizen, died at his home, 433 North 16th street, on Sunday, February 22, 1931, at the age of 75 years, 6 months and 3 days, after an illness of three weeks with flu and pneumonia

Largely attended funeral services, conducted by Rev. B. A. Staugle, were held at the United Brethren church on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, followed by interment in the Chariton cemetery.

Richard Spencer Haltom, son of M. T. and Elizabeth Haltom, was born in Lucas county, Iowa, on August 19, 1855, and with the exception of a residence of about two years in Warren county, his entire life was spent in this county.

He was united in marriage to Miss Mary C. Roberts in November, 1872, who died in May, 1884. To this union six sons were born, two of whom preceded him in death, William dying in infancy, and Edward in June, 1916.

He was again married on December 30, 1884, to Retta L. Marker, who survives him. To this union nine children were born, four sons and five daughters, one son, Johnnie, dying in infancy.

Those left, with the wife, to mourn their loss are: Frank, of Lacona; Ellis, of Osceola; Mrs. Lloyd Dixon, of Des Moines; Bert, Archie, Ernest, Olin, Mrs. Joe Anderson, Mrs. Ira Show, Mrs. Ray Shelton, Mrs. Glenn Davidson, all of Chariton; and James, an officer in the United States Army.

He is also survived by forty-four grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and three sisters, Mrs. Katie Freestone, of Des Moines; Mrs. Martha Weakland, of Woodburn; Mrs. Eva Sylvara, of Lucas, and a number of other relatives and a host of friends.
