The Chariton Patriot
Chariton, Iowa
January 13, 1875Dr. P.E. MINKLER, who stopped a while in Chariton recently, and who caused
his professional card to be inserted in the PATRIOT, (it will be dropped
next week) is in jail somewhere, we learn, for abducting a child from his
divorced wife, and is not likely to be back to C. soon.
--------------------------Mr. and Mrs. S.W. PIMM, of Jackson Township, have our thanks for a Christmas
duck. It was a nice one, fat and tender. In short it more fully illustrated
the meaning of the expression "as fat as butter," than any fowl or animal
that we ever saw, and was actually so fat that it could not be cooked
without melting. It was not only a "butter duck" but a duck made of butter.Brutal Assault -- Mr. SAMUEL PEACOCK, a brother of our friend, J.C., is
express agent at this place, was brutally assaulted at Melrose, on Christmas
day, by a man by the name of GROGAN. MR. PEACOCK is constable at Melrose,
and was making an arrest when GROGAN slipped up behind him and struck him a
blow on the head, knocking him down and inflicting a serious and possibly a
fatal injury. GROGAN attempted to escape but has been arrested, and is now
in jail to await his trial.
---------------------------GEORGE FERGUSON living in the west part of town had a full washing of
clothes stolen together with the line on which they were hung, on Monday
night of this week. Quite an effort was made Monday night by the use of
lanterns to track the thief to his hiding place and to reclaim the garments
but the effort was futile until Tuesday morning when the whole -- minus one
piece -- were found on the rear end of MR. FERGUSON's own lot. Whether it
was intended as a "sell" or whether fear of discovery got the better of the
purloiner's acquisitiveness and caused him to return the property, is not
known.
