Page 1Sarah Drake Hurley was born near Miriam, Sullivan county, Indiana, November 5, 1826. She had therefore reached the ripe old age of 85 years, 2 months and 9 days when the Lord called her from this life to his kingdom in the early hours of the Sabbath day, January 14th. She came west with her parents in 1837, settling first temporarily in Warren county, Illinois, coming to Wapello on Feb. 11, 1838, when eleven years of age. She has lived in or near Wapello ever since. Hers has probably been the longest continuous residence in Wapello.
She was united in marriage on May 7, 1848, to Aaron D. Hurley, who preceded her in death on the fifteen of January, 1893. There were nine children, four of whom preceded her in death and five are living to mourn her loss: David L. and Aaron D. Hurley, Wapello; J. W. Hurley, of Friendship, Wis., and Misses Alice and Florence Hurley, residing at home. Her only sister, Mrs. Clara Morgan, is living here. She united with the Presbyterian church in 1889 and was a faithful member, taking part in in the activities of the Mite society.
Her last illness began about the last of August. However, she was able to be up and around the house until a day or two after her 85th birthday. The funeral services were held from the home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 conducted by Rev. Carl Montanus, pastor of the Presbyterian church, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Wapello cemetery.
