Page 1Monday's Muscatine Journal: Dr. C. H. Sterneman, one of Muscatine's best known professional men passed away suddenly at his home on West Sixth street Monday morning at about 5:30 o'clock, after a critical illness of but an hours duration. His demise was due to chronic heart disease. Last evening he enjoyed a ride about the city and retired early, resting well during the early part of the night. At 4:30 o'clock he was stricken and while medical aid was hastily summoned, it was evident that his illness was critical and that his end was near. Caster Hiller Sterneman was born in Lancaster County, Penn., and after spending his childhood there moved with his parents to Ohio in 1853, in which state they resided until 1855, when the family moved to Cedar Rapids. Dr. Sterneman studied dental surgery under the direction of his father, Christian sterneman, who was also a dentist.
Dr. Sterneman was married to Miss Millie Pearson of Cedar Rapids and her death occurred about fifteen years ago. Sometime later he was united in matrimony with Miss Emma Bothe, of Wapello, Ia., who survives him. To the first union were born two children, Alice, who died a number of years ago, and Ned, who is now a resident of Dumont, Col. Two sister, Mrs. Ellen Pence, of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. J. C. Manning, of Sany, Ore, also survive him, as does one brother, David, of this city. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal church, and was prominent in that organization, being a member of the vestry. Dr. Sterneman had a marked military bearing and was one of the original members of old Company C, 2nd, I. N. G., of which he was commissioned 1st lieutenant. He was also a charter member of the Knights of Pythias of Iowa. As an active and enterprising business man, ever prompt and reliable, he won a distinguished place in his profession and in his death the community loses a worthy and valued citizen.
