Page 2On Monday morning, April, 10, 1911, at six o'clock, at her home in Oakville, Iowa, occurred the death of Mary Ann Kirkland Hiller. Mrs. Hiller was born at Marietta, Ohio, on September 27, 1846 and was the oldest child of William and Hannah Kirkland. Her father was born in Ohio, being of Scotch parentage. The mother was born in Ohio ans was of Scotch and English parents, her name being before marriage, Hannah Farley. The deceased moved to Winnebago county, Ill., with her parents when eleven years of age, and from there to Henry county, Ill., two years after, where the old family homestead still remains, occupied by a brother, David Kirkland.
With her parents the family consisted of seven children, two sisters and five brothers. Her father died in February, 1896 and her oldest brother, Curtis Kirkland, passed away in 1878. Of her maiden family, to mourn her loss there remains her mother, Hannah Kirkland, sister, Lizella, and brother William, living in Woodhull, Ill., and Lloyd G., a lawyer of Chicago, Ill. After moving to Henry county, Ill., she lived with her parents and assisted with the work during the hardships of early settlement and through the dark days of the Civil war. Her parents being staunch Union people, she often recalled, instances of threatened danger caused by southern sympathizer in the neighborhood.
She was married at the old home in Henry county, Ill., to Martin W. Hiller, February 13, 1868, who is still alive. In 1882, with her husband and family she moved to Jefferson township, Louisa county, Iowa, where she lived on a farm until the spring of 1908, when she moved with her husband and two daughters to Oakville, Iowa. She leaves to deeply mourn her loss, besides her mother, sister and four brothers, her husband, daughters, Grace and Ella, of Oakville, Iowa; Mrs. E.L. Streed, Of Orian, Ill.; William and LaVerne, living in Jefferson township, Louisa county, Iowa, three grandchildren, Mildred and Ivan Streed, of Orian, Ill and Dorothy Hiller, daughter of Wm. Hiller.
The deceased was a member since girlhood of the Christian church. She was a loving mother, a sympathetic friend and always saw the bright spots of life. The last year of her life was spent in an invalid's chair caused by the results of a paralytic stroke on February 5, 1910. The funeral services were held at her old church at Toolesboro, Iowa, Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, April 12, 1911, conducted by Rev. A. S. Covert, assisted by Rev. H. E. Butler, pastor of the Presbyterian and Methodists churches of Oakville. Interment occurred in the Parsons cemetery, in Jefferson township, Louisa county, Ia.
