Robert E. Archibald, an old and highly respected resident of this city, passed away at this home this afternoon, March 30, death being due to Bright's disease. He had been in failing health the past several months, but was not considered dangerous until the first of the week, when he began to fail rapidly. Mr. Archibald was born in Cecil county, Md., March 17, 1832, being 79 years, and 13 days old at the time of his death. He came to Iowa with his parents, Robert and Levina (Trump) Archibald in 1852, arriving at Wapello October 1, of that year. The family located in this city, where the parents passed the remained of their lives, the mother dying March 11, 1868 and the father in September 1872. There were originally nine sons and one daughter in the family, of whom only two sons now survive, Rufus M. of Wapello and William W., of Burlington.

Mr. Archibald was employed as a merchant's clerk in his native state until he migrated to Louisa county. After coming to this county he clerked until September 1, 1861 when he enlisted as a private in Company K, 8th Iowa infantry, and was detailed a s hospital steward and stationed in the General Hospital of Leavenworth, Kans., from which he was discharged in February 1863, for physical disability. He re-enlisted May 14, 1864 in Company H. 45th Iowa Infantry in the 100 days service, was promoted second Duty Sergeant, served the term of his enlistment and was mustered out Sept. 30, 1864.

Returning to Wapello, he was again employed as merchant's clerk till 1870 when he formed a partnership with T. L. Garrett in the general mercantile business. The connection continued till 1873 when Mr. Archibald, in company with T. G. Anderson opened a hardware store. In 1875 he sold out and engaged in clerking till 1883 when he was appointed Auditor of Louisa county to fill a vacancy. He was elected to the same office that fall and was reelected in 1885, serving in that capacity six years.

Mr. Archibald was married in Wapello May 18, 1868 to Miss Mary F. Crilly, a native of Ohio, who preceded him in death a few years ago. Five children grace their union: Frank D., of Monmouth, Ill.; Ed L., of Chicago, Ill.; Will, residing on a farm east of Wapello; Addie Mary and Harry R., at home. Mr. Archibald was a member of Wapello Lodge No. 5, A. F. & A. M. and of A. M. Taylor post no. 153. He was an honest and upright citizen, a devoted husband and father and a good neighbor and his death will be mourned by the entire community. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
