Page 1(West Liberty) Because the fire in her kitchen range was slow in starting, Mrs. Jones, the wife of Harry Jones, of West Liberty, Iowa, agent of the Standard Oil Company, picked up a two gallon can of kerosene and started to pour the fluid on the fire. An explosion followed and in an instant she was enveloped in flames. A living, torch, she ran screaming from her kitchen out onto the back porch and fell prostrate onto the porch floor. Her husband, who was in the rear of the premises, ran to her assistance and attempted to extinguish the flames with his coat. Mrs. Jones was so terrible burned that her death occurred the same afternoon at 2:15.
Mrs. Jones had been a resident of West Liberty but a short time, going there with her husband from Columbus City, last November. Her parents, who reside in South Dakota, were immediately notified of the terrible accident, but arrived too late to see her alive. Mr. Jones was severely though not seriously burned in his efforts to extinguish the flames. The funeral services were held at the home in West Liberty Wednesday morning at 9:30, conducted by Rev. H. B. Scoles, pastor of the M. E. church. At noon the remains were taken to Columbus City, where a second service was held at 2 o'clock and where interment was made.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Jones is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Marshall, on sister, Mrs. Dale Rickard and her brother, Chalmer Marshall, all of Worthing, S. D.
Miss Matie Marshall was born in Columbus City, February 19, 1890, where she spent her entire life until last March, when she moved with her family , to Worthing, S. D. She strayed there about six months, then returned to visit relatives in Columbus City, where in October she was married to Harry Jones, of that place. The marriage took place in Morning Sun. After a short time spent in the home of Mr. Jones parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Jones, they moved to West Liberty.
