William Richard “Dick” Summerwill, 89, longtime Iowa City banker and patron of the arts, died peacefully on Monday, March 17, 2025.

To celebrate Dick’s life the family will greet friends from 10 AM to 1 PM, Saturday, April 26, 2025 at the Stanley Café in Hancher Auditorium, where a service of remembrance will be at held 11 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Stanley Museum of Art or Friends of the Iowa City Library Foundation..

Dick was born December 5, 1935, in Sioux City, the son of William W. and Maurine (Jacobsen) Summerwill. He was a proud graduate of the University of Michigan where he received a degree in economics. Dick served in the US Navy as an executive officer.

On February 7,1959 Dick married the love of his life, Joyce Phaneuf at “Kirk in the Hills” Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Dick started his career in banking at the Northern Trust Company in Chicago, IL. He later became president of Iowa State Bank and Trust, which is now MidWest One Bank.

Dick was civic and community minded. He believed in the importance of giving back to the community you love. He was an active member of many organizations in Iowa City. Dick was a member of the Foreign Relations Committee which he founded with two other banking friends in Iowa City. He was active in the National Banking Association, and he was also a past president of Iowa City Noon Rotary.

Dick was loyal, energetic, inspirational, caring, humorous, a leader and friend to many.

Most important to Dick was his family. He is survived by his wife, Joyce and their three children, Tracy McCormick (Kenneth) of Pasadena, California, Kelly Summerwill of Hinsdale, Illinois, and Jeffrey Summerwill of St. Charles, Illinois; five grandchildren, Tracy’s daughter, Katie Hampton and son, Charlie McCormick, Kelly’s daughter, Annie Schulz, and Jeffrey’s sons, Thomas and Ryan Summerwill; his sister, Ann Swaney of Cedar Rapids, and the many beloved Summerwill cousins.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Bridget; brother-in-law, Dr. Robert Swaney.
