Leone Irene (Bogaard) Vander Woude, known as “Moo” to her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, died on January 14, 2025 at the age of 105 years and 4 months and 10 days. Leone was born on September 4, 1919 on the family farm in Carroll Township in O’Brien County, Iowa. She was delivered by her father and became the fourth of eight children born to Arie Dirk Bogaard and Gertrude (De Haan) Bogaard. She attended country school and graduated from Archer High School in 1936, and received her RN degree at St. Joseph’s in Sioux City. Before WWII she was employed at hospitals in Detroit, New York City and Long Beach, CA. She married Sid Vander Woude at the Hitching Post in Las Vegas on March 29, 1942. During the war years she and Sid lived in a 16 foot travel trailer that was pulled from Long Beach to Army Air Force bases in Deming, NM, Wichita Falls, TX, back to Deming (Cheryl Joy born in 1944), then Tucson (Stanley Scott born 1945), Provo, Utah and then back to Tucson when Sid was sent overseas. After the war they moved to Sanborn, Iowa (Mark Allen born 1950 and Steven Jon in 1953) where Sid operated a service station with his brother until 1965 when Sid was hired to be administrator for the new Prairie View Nursing Home and Leone was the Head Nurse. In December 1969 they moved to Coralville, Iowa to open the Lantern Park Nursing Home until retirement in 1985. In 2004 they moved to Idyllwild Condominiums in Iowa City. They spent retirement traveling the world and also taking grandchildren on many summertime adventures around the Midwest, They spent winters in Borago Springs, CA and Marco Island, Florida. When Sid died in December 2007 Leone continued wintering in Marco Island until she decided to spend her final winters at her Iowa City home in 2022. Leone had regular daily rituals that included doing cross-word puzzles, jig-saw puzzles, reading novels, feeding birds, tending flowers, listening to religious programs and reading the Bible, but especially enjoyed watching her family’s activities via “Find My” on her IPad and countless FaceTime calls. She is survived by her youngest brother, Calvin, of Texas, children Cheryl (Ward) Petrich of Naples, Florida, Stan (Alma) of Chariton, Iowa, Mark (Pam) of Madison, Wisconsin and Steve (Barbara) of Marco Island and Iowa City. She has 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren living in Missouri, Chicago, Arizona, Arkansas, North Carolina, Seattle, Wisconsin, California, Colorado and Brooklyn, NY. Leone had regular visits from her grandchildren and even got to hold and hug her youngest 1 year old and 2 year old great-grand babies last summer. Leone has many nephews and nieces around the country and many were in Iowa City last September to celebrate her 105th birthday.
A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Bird House Hospice Home of Johnson County.
