Douglas Dean Brown, 64, of North Liberty, passed away at his home surrounded by family.
Funeral services will be at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 11 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Iowa City. The family will greet guests at the church from 11:00am -1:00pm. Following the service please join the family for refreshments in the church parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Technology Services at Gloria Dei, Fur Fun Rescue in Lisbon Iowa, or Electronic Frontier Foundation.
Doug was born on September 3, 1960 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Kenneth and Minerva (Nuss) Brown. He was raised in Dysart, Iowa, graduating in 1979 from Dysart-Geneseo High School. His youth activities included choir, band, and Zion Lutheran Church youth groups. He attended and graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa in 1983. He fell in love with and married Linda Cooper on July 17, 1999 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Iowa City Iowa. A few years later the birth of sons Will and Chris came into their life.
Doug’s professional life began in the radio broadcasting world, working for radio stations at Wartburg, Waterloo, and Sioux City. From there he began the pursuit of business – consumer solutions for the Yellow Pages division of McCleod USA in Cedar Rapids, Ia. He also led city administration software solution development for a subdivision of HR Green, Inc. in Cedar Rapids. The last decade he was the Technology Director at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, taking to heart Gathered by Grace, Scattered for Service.
Doug enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers, sharing his passion for music with Will, discussing geeky stuff with Chris and attending CES, an annual national new technology trade show. He also was an avid reader of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, and enjoyed hanging out with his canine pals Cheeto and Chester.
Doug is survived by his wife Linda (North Liberty, Iowa), sons Christopher (West Des Moines) and William (Miami, FL). Siblings: Dave (Judy) Brown of West Des Moines, IA, Judy Brown of Rosemount, MN, and Joyce (Jeff) Kuethe of Marion, IA. Also: Nieces/Nephews including Cole (Erin) Kuethe of Marion, Trent (Trinity) Kuethe of Greenville, SC, Lauren Kuethe of Marion, Shane (Janet) Pliskin of San Diego, CA, and Debbie (Brent) Hommer of Norwalk, IA, and a large number of cousins, and numerous extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Minerva Brown, in-laws Howard and Avril Cooper.
