Bruce was born on March 9, 1943, the son of Troy Raymond and Mary Thelma (Eigle) Thompson. He graduated from Freeport High School. Bruce went on to attend the University of Iowa and graduated from Iowa Wesleyan University with a degree in Business Administration.
He was united in marriage to Charol Atchison on December 9, 1972 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City. He worked in the information systems industry at Warner Lambert for over 30 years. Because of his expertise, Bruce became a supervisor and director before retiring.
Bruce was always a huge sports fan. He was a letter winner on the University of Iowa Golf Team in 1963. He continued to follow the Iowa Hawkeyes, especially the wrestling and football programs. Bruce attended several Big Ten wrestling tournaments, and he went to the Rose Bowl to cheer on the Hawkeyes three separate times.
Bruce was a great dad, and loved his children, always wanting them to be happy. He coached their sports teams when they were younger and built a playhouse for them in the yard. He was a handyman around the house. He completed finish work in a couple of their basements and was often found doing yard work around the farm.
His family includes his wife, Charol; a daughter, Melissa (Jeff) Schneider of Laurel, Maryland, a son, Chad Thompson of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and a daughter, Stephanie Kimmel (Louis Hribik) of Long Valley, New Jersey; grandchildren: Connor Kimmel, Mason Schneider, Matthew Hribik, and Bryce Schneider; two nieces, Barbara Willoughby and Connie Barrett; and many extended relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Beverly Thompson Huisinga.
In lieu flowers, memorials may be directed to the family of Bruce Thompson. Please feel free to dress casually and wear Hawkeye colors in support of one of Bruce's favorite teams!
