I have been searching for Armstrong Hill in the 1860 Census but have not been able to find him. But I know that he had to be in Jefferson Co at that time.
Check this out:1850 Brooke Co.Virginia(now West Virginia)--Armstrong Hill,28 b. Pa; Elizabeth,32,b. Ohio; Martin?,12,b.Ohio;a female(can't read name),b.VA;William,4,b.VA;Thomas,2,b.Va;Mary,1,b.VA;James 2/12 b. VA.There is no Armstrong Hill in Jefferson Co. in 1860 or in West Virginia or Indiana or Ohio. But in Jefferson Co, Fairfield Iowa There is a James A Hill 41,b.Pa; Elizabeth,41,b.Ohio;Emma,16 b.VA;William 14,b.VA; Thomas,12,b.VA;Mary,11,b.VA;James,10,b.VA;Josephine,8,b.VA;and Joseph,2,b.Iowa. The 1870 Jefferson Co Iowa Census Lists James Hill,50,b.PA;Elizabeth,50 b.Ohio;Thomas,23 b.VA;Josephine,18,b.VA;Joseph,12,b.Iowa;and Julia,2,b.Iowa.(the Widow of Armstrong Hill applied for a pension on his death and listed one daughter under 16,Julia) Soo-oo do you think that Armstrong's real name was James Armstrong Hill? and that these are the same families??(Mary would have been married to Alexander Duncan by the 1870 census and Josephine didn't marry Andrew Duncan till 14 April 1871) Is there an obituary for James A Hill? Is there a probate record for Preston Duncan?
