I now know Fred Hampton, born 1879 in Fairfield, was living in Batavia IA when he registered for the draft in WW I. He said he was a Brakeman for CB&Q railroad in 1917.
I recently found he married in Burlington Des Moines Co. IA in 1931. He indicated his home was still in Batavia and that he was a "farmer". I know he was married in 1900 to his first wife in Decatur Co. IA.
I'm trying to find Fred's mother, Clara HAMPTON, after the death of her husband, Levi (Lee) HAMPTON in 1882.
Are there any city directories for the time period of the 1920's and 1930's? I'd appreciate knowing if either Fred HAMPTON is listed, or his mother. The 1931 marriage license says he lived in Batavia but his obituary in the Ottumwa newspaper in 1937 indicated he'd lived there for 44 yrs, which doesn't seem to be accurate. There are other inconsistencies in his marriage record(s) as well as in his obituary. If anyone has access to land records for Jefferson Co., I'd like to know if there is a Deed for Fred HAMPTON.
Would be glad to share info with others interested.
