Thank you so much for your prompt response! I appreciate your efforts on my behalf so much! Here is the information about my great-great grandfather, Nathan W. Dowd. This is as far back as the family has been able to confirm. My additional research has documented the following information and raised the questions that are listed below in NOTES FOR REFERENCE.
I am searching for the parents of Nathan W. Dowd. One clue seems to be an Alexander, who is ten years younger than Nathan, and lived with him in 1860 and perhaps in the same town in 1870.

NOTES FOR REFERENCE:
Listed with Nathan’s household in 1860 (Kansas) is Alexander, age 17. He is 10 years younger than Nathan, which would put his birth year at ~1844.
Listed in 1870, also in Lockridge, IA, but in a separate household from Nathan, is an Alexander, also born ~1844, with his mother (?) Martha Dowd, age 64, born in New York; and Margret, age 20, born in Iowa. Is Martha the widow of William Dowd, who died in 1865? Is this the same Alexander from 1860? What is the relationship of this Alexander, if any, to Nathan?
An Alexander is again listed in 1900 in Washington, Taylor County, IA with wife Margaret A. and daughter Grace. Here both of Alexander’s parents are listed as born in Ohio. Are Margret and Margaret A. the same person?
In 1920, Alexander is again listed with Margaret A. and Grace in Omaha, NE. (Nathan and son James E.'s family--my great-grandfather-- also lived in Nebraska in the 1890s before moving to Florida abt. 1900.)
There is also an Alexander, born ~1844, who is the confirmed brother of William E. Dowd. So is this the same Alexander who lived with Nathan's family in Kansas and in Lockridge, Iowa, Or are there two Alexanders? The major discrepancy is that Nathan consistently listed mother’s birthplace as Ohio, unlike Alexander (at least in 1870 and 1910 censuses) who listed his mother’s birthplace as New York.
