H. A. HOOPES

Harley Allen HOOPES son of Oliver T. and Iowa CHANDLER HOOPES was born December 21, 1865. As he was born on a farm just east of town he has been a citizen of this community for nearly three-quarters of a century.

He was united in marriage to Laura YOUMANS, March 13, 1895 and located on a farm near this city where they lived for about twenty-five years. He was a successful farmer and retired a number of years ago to become a citizen of Fairfield. He took a leading part in municipal affairs, having served as mayor of Fairfield.

He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge and also of the Knights of Pythias and wearing honorably its three links standing for Friendship, Love and Truth and maintaining the motto "Be Generous, Brave and True."

Mr. HOOPES joined the Methodist church March 21, 1915 under the pastorate of A. H. Lathrop and has been a member since that time.

He was actively engaged in home duties up to and on the very day of his death. The summons to the great beyond came without warning so far as his family or friends knew. He passed away with a heart attack while changing a tire on his car. Thus another one of our pioneer citizens has passed on.

His death occurred Friday May 10, 1940 at the age of 74 years, four months and nineteen days.

He is survived by his wife, a sister, Miss Harriet HOOPES of Fairfield and a brother Warner of Bismarck, N. D. and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Sunday May 12 at 3:00 p.m. at the Behner Funeral Home and were in charge of Rev. M. A. Gable, assisted by Rev. W. J. Bell with Mrs Bell furnishing music at the piano. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery.
