Mary Lou DeHaai
July 10, 1935 - March 29, 2025Mary Lou (Wickliff) DeHaai (89) from Monroe, Iowa passed away Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. She was born on July 10, 1935, in Newton, Iowa to Donald D. Wickliff and Mary Mae (Garrett) Wickliff, the fourth of nine children. Her childhood was filled with adventure, sharing, and love. There was never a dull moment growing up in the Wickliff family. She was very proud of her five brothers’ military careers and her three sisters never ending support throughout life. Mary Lou graduated from Newton High School in 1953, which was the first class to graduate from the new high school. She was employed at Parson's Manufacturing, Vernon Company and the Newton Country Club before starting a career at the Internal Revenue Service, retiring in 2000 as a Revenue Officer.
Mary Lou was united in marriage to Melvin John DeHaai on December 22, 1957. They had six Children: Douglas, Laurie, Julie, Rebecca, David and Wendi. Raising six kids had its challenges and rewards but she loved them all uniquely and dearly. Mary Lou loved the color green, she adored cardinals, and she was quick witted, funny and sharp as ever even on her last few days on Earth. A real blessing and pleasure to know.
Those left to treasure her memory are Douglas (Wendy) DeHaai, Laurie DeHaai, Julie (Tom) Slater, Rebecca DeHaai, David (Brenda) DeHaai and Wendi DeHaai. Her grandchildren are Doug's children: Lillian, JC, Amber and Rodgar. Laurie's children: Ashley and Matthew. Julie's children: Hayley, Brittany, Reagan and Carson. David's children: Kelsie, Morgan and Rylee. Wendi's child: Brady. Her siblings Betty Waddle, Dave (Cindy) Wickliff, Jane Mouchka, Judy (Terry) Bradley and Jim (Carol) Wickliff. Too many to count are the great grandchildren, nephews, nieces and cousins that lit up her days with joy. Mary Lou is preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers (Junior, William and Harold).
There will be a visitation on Wednesday, April 2 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Coburn Funeral Home, 602 N. Commerce Street, Monroe. Her graveside service is Thursday, April 3 at 10:00, McKeever Cemetery, Highway 117 N, Colfax, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, donations would gladly be appreciated to Monroe Fire Department (they visited Mary Lou too many times) or Newton VFW (She belonged to every organization associated with the VFW that women could belong).
