Maytag Rites Set Thursday

Private funeral services for L. B. Maytag Sr., 78, will be held Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Our Savior in Colorado Springs, Colo. Burial will be in the Colorado city.

Mr. Maytag, the last of four Maytags who served as president of the Newton company bearing the family name, died Tuesday in his home in the Broadmoor section of Colorado Springs.

He was one of two sons of Fred L., who founded the home laundry machine company at the turn of the century.

L. B. Maytag, a native of Newton, would have been 79 on Aug. 24.

As a youth he worked for his father as a foundry laborer, later was graduated from Iowa State University at Ames and then joined in the management of the company.

He was named director of the company in 1911.

He became vice president in 1918, three years later was named president.

Under his leadership as president in the 1920's, the company erased its debt. The company's financial stability was firmly established during the period.

Mr. Maytag advocated a completely new washer design, and his idea to transfer the agitator from the lid to the bottom of the tub led to a different principle of washing. The principle still is employed in most washers today.

He relinquished the president's post to his brother Elmer H. Maytag in 1926. The latter was president until his death in 1940.

The last Maytag to head the firm was Fred Maytag II, son of Elmer H. He died in 1962.

L. B. Maytag Sr. had farm interests near Newton and in Alabama after he left the company and moved to Colorado Springs in 1934 where he became active in civil affairs. However, he was made a member of the Maytag board of directors in 1940 and continued until his retirement last year.

Before leaving Iowa he served as 1932 state chairman of the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment.

The survivors include two sons, L. B. Maytag Jr., of Miami, Fla., president of National Airlines, and a successor to his father as a Maytag director. David D. of Los Angeles.

Other survivors include the widow, Elizabeth, A daughter, Mrs. James A. Krentler of Colorado Springs; a sister, Mrs. Will Howard Smith of Prattville, Ala. and 15 grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established for the Heart Center, Penrose Hospital, Colorado Springs.
