Ellen C. Oliver-Moffitt
October 17, 1954 - December 31, 2024Ellen C. Oliver-Moffitt, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on December 31, 2024, in Prairie City, Iowa. The daughter of William and Elizabeth (Nusbaum) Oliver, she was born on October 17, 1954, in Mission, Kansas. Ellen lived a life marked by great compassion and kindness.
Ellen earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Iowa, reflecting her dedication to education and personal growth. As a social worker at the VA, she made many contributions to the lives of veterans and their families, demonstrating a commitment to service that extended beyond her profession. Ellen also shared her knowledge and passion for psychology by teaching at Grand View University, where she inspired countless students.
An active and devoted member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Ellen participated in various ministries, notably the Respect Life Committee. Her faith was an important part of her life, guiding her in her journey to uplift others. Ellen was known for her warm, approachable demeanor; her ability to engage with anyone and learn their life story in just one conversation was a testament to her genuine interest in people. She was often seen waving to neighbors and friends, spreading joy and kindness in her community.
Ellen is survived by her loving husband, Gary Moffitt; her two sons, Michael Moffitt and David Moffitt; granddaughter, Emma Moffitt; her brothers, Steve Oliver, Garold Oliver (Evelyn), and Bill Oliver; nephews, Aaron Oliver, Andrew Oliver, Billy Oliver, Mitch Graham, and Jared Graham; and nieces, Melissa Malish and Megan Doffing. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion and connection that will be felt by all who knew her.
Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, William and Elizabeth Oliver; and a sister, Laura Graham.
A visitation will be held in Ellen's honor on January 7, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax, Iowa. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Des Moines, Iowa, on January 8, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Following the Mass, lunch will be held at the church. A burial at Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made out to St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Ellen will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her compassionate spirit and gentle heart will forever remain in our hearts.
